Super Physician Winner

(November 2005)

On November 2, 2005, the Jacksonville Business Journal selected Scot Ackerman, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, as a Super Physician in their special report on Health Care Heroes.  Dr. Ackerman was selected for his exemplary service as a physician and his commitment to administrative and community issues.

Dr. Ackerman came to St.Vincent’s Health System as a Radiation Oncologist over 18 years ago after finishing his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.  He feels that the hospital has a mission that fits with his personal values. He is dedicated to quality and compassionate care for all of his cancer patients.  His patients are very fond of his warm and upbeat personality.  They often keep in touch with him years after they are finished with their treatment.  Ryan Perkins, MD, Board Certified Radiation Oncologist states, “I think one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned from him is to make sure our patients end up with the treatment they want.  The patient should have as enjoyable an experience as they possibly can while being treated for cancer.”

Dr. Ackerman’s devotion is not limited to seeing patients in his clinics daily.  He is committed to improving medical care and quality of life.  He serves in 11 board and administrative positions at St. Vincent’s Medical Center including his current position as President of the medical staff.  Last year he served as Chairman for the St. Vincent’s Foundation and was instrumental in acquiring funds to support the new Mary Virginia Terry Cancer Center at St. Vincent’s.  He states, “As we outgrow our current facility, the new Cancer Center will give us the opportunity to provide the latest technology in a coordinated and holistic environment.”

Dr. Ackerman also serves the community through his work with the American Cancer Society.  He served as President of the Board of Directors in 2000 when the American Cancer Society coordinated with other organizations to reduce the risk of second hand smoke to the community by eliminating smoking in public restaurants.  He currently serves on the Florida Division Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society and as a Florida Division Delegate to the National Assembly of the American Cancer Society to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.

As cancer care evolves, Dr. Ackerman will continue to be an important figure for the community and individuals touched by cancer.
