- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy

North Florida's leader in the advancement of cancer treatment offers the highly acclaimed Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) system.  St. Vincent's Medical Center was one of the first in North Florida and one of a handful of facilities in the world to carry the system. The Department of Radiation Therapy, headed by board certified radiation oncologists from First Coast Oncology, oversees and operates this state-of-the-art cancer treatment system offered at all three First Coast Oncology locations.

IMRT is an approach to conformal radiation therapy that conforms a high dose to the target volume while restricting dose to the surrounding sensitive structures. The system is specifically designed to treat that small percentage of cancer patients with small or hard to reach tumors. In IMRT, the beam intensity is varied across the treatment field. Rather than being treated with a single, large, uniform beam, the patient is treated with many very small beams at a precise target.
